Women's rights in Brunei under the Islamic Family Law, 1999

Women

Islam is believed to have existed ever since the fourteenth century with the Islamization of Awang Alak Betatar, with the adopted Muslim name Sultan Muhammad Shah, as the first sultan to rule Brunei (1363–1402). Hence, Islamic law is assumed to have been practised by Bruneian society. The laws of Adat 1 (Traditional), Resam 2 (Customary), Syarak 3 (Islamic) and Hukum Kanun Brunei 4 (Regulatory) became the reference for the people and guide for the rulers of Brunei and administration of the sultanate.
